Inmotion RS Midnight – Is This $3999 “Super Scooter” REALLY Waterproof?

RS underwater thumbnail

The Inmotion RS Midnight is a true super-scooter, with dual 2000W motors, a 72V 40Ah battery, and adjustable suspension and ride height. It is constructed with extremely high-quality parts, and might even be… waterproof? (We’ll get to that later in the review).

It is by far the best long range street scooter for riding in and keeping up with traffic, and it soundly beat out the Wolf King GTR on the Ginger On Wheels range course.

The main drawback to the Inmotion RS is the limited off-road capabilities – the suspension is relatively tight, and the scooter only comes with street tires.

Is the Inmotion RS Midnight really waterproof?

3 months ago, I posted this Youtube Short announcing I was going to ride the Inmotion RS through over 1-foot of standing water, and many of you are still waiting for the results…

Summary

Even after being exposed to WAY more potential water damage than any scooter would reasonably encounter, the Inmotion RS still works perfectly fine. Even the motor bearings are good. It appears that the water gets in through the top of the deck in the front and back, where the motor wires enter, and through the hole that the wire goes into for the front/rear runner lights. Those holes are about a quarter inch or half inch long, oval shaped, and there’s no sealant around it at all, so if the water comes above the bottom of the deck then it’s basically just filling up like a sinking ship.

The only thing stopping it from filling right up is the fact that there’s nowhere for the air to escape, so the water can only fill up as fast as the air can seep out through the crack in the top of the deck. If you had silicone sealant around the edges where the deck plate touches the top and you put a little dab of silicone in the screw holes, then the Inmotion RS would be damn near waterproof.

The only rust visible ANYWHERE was near the front and back of the battery attachments on the screws, which could easily be avoided by using stainless steel screws.

There are cotton absorption strips that run the length of the deck. These absorb any water that manages to get inside, and then when you accelerate the scooter or ride up an incline, the water gradually moves to the rear of the scooter, where it drains out through some tiny holes on the underside of the deck. Pretty clever design.

My best guess is that the controllers are covered in conformal coating, to prevent short circuits, and the battery is just extremely well sealed. I’m extremely impressed at how the RS Midnight held up to being submerged. The only sign that it was completely underwater were the small amounts of debris on top of the controller boxes, and the rust spots from the screws on the battery. If Inmotion had used stainless or titanium screws on the battery box, it would be really hard to tell at all!

The scooter still functions exactly as designed and asside form the tiny rust spots on the cotton strips, there is no way to tell the Inmotion RS Midnight from VoroMotors was ever underwater!
