Do I Need An Electric Scooter Charge Splitter?

With the rise of enormous batteries in electric scooters, fast charging is becoming much more common. However, unless you’re very careful, it can damage your scooter internals. The Wolf King and GT Pro scooters for example, have a 5 amp inline fuse. These fuses can blow if you charge over 5 amps per port, sometimes even lower. That scenario could very easily leave you stranded on a long ride. The 60 volt and 72 volt chargers sold at PEV Outlet come with this scooter charge splitter already, but we recommend that you split the current on any charger.

Splitting the current between two ports keeps the transfer wires from the charge port to battery much cooler. This results in less stress to your charging internals in the form of less heat. Don’t get stranded on a long ride because of a damaged fuse or charge port. Use a Scooter Charge Splitter. How Fast Is Too Fast?

As a general rule, most scooter batteries can safely charge at “0.5 C”.  That is equal to a rate of half of the amp hour rating of your battery pack. For example, a 20amp hour battery pack in something like the Varla Eagle One scooter could (in theory) safely charge at 10amps. 10amps/20amp hour battery pack = 0.5 . Or .5C. A 15 amp hour battery pack can charge at 7.5 amps, and so on. While some electric unicycles have patented high speed charging circuits allowing for up to 20amps, unfortunately electric scooters aren’t there quite yet.

Many electric scooter manufacturers recommend a maximum charge rate of 5amps per port. That’s not because the battery can’t handle it, but usually because they took the cheap route. Usually with cheap wiring and BMS modules. Using the charge splitter effectively doubles the rating of your charge port internals by evenly distributing your charger's output. 

For example, our 60 volt fast chargers would blow the inline fuse of a Kaabo King GT Pro through one port. But not if you split the current between two ports. Now you can use one charger to charge four, five, or even six times as fast as a stock charger will allow. Your 9amp charger just became two 4.5 amp chargers. Even if you’re not using a fast charger, splitting the current will always keep your internals colder. Less heat = less damage over time.

Scooter Fast Charge Splitter Prerequisites

  • Your electric scooter must use GX16-3 charge ports. These are the most common type of connectors for scooter chargers but recently have seen quite a few proprietary connectors flooding the market. Before you order, make sure your charger and scooter charge ports use these GX16-3 connectors. 
  • Never fast charge a damaged battery! Any visible damage counts, including water damage. This goes without saying, but you’d be surprised some of the things I’ve seen… This can lead to very serious consequences.
  • Never fast charge a battery unsupervised. Using a charge splitter with a normal charger is fine to leave alone if you trust your battery and have secondary protections in place. I personally only extend this level of trust to fast chargers when I'm outside charging during the middle of a ride. Grab a quick bite and enjoy a picnic shelter while your scooter guzzles the power out of a nearby outlet.
